Tracking the Rise of Childhood Obesity in America

Tracking the Rise of Childhood Obesity in America

More bad news for the South -
At the top of the obesity scale was Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama, while at the other end of the spectrum is Oregon, a state that seems to be fighting childhood obesity effectively and experienced a reduction in childhood obesity from when the study started in 2003. Also of note is that children in Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia, and Kansas had more than twice the adjusted odds of being obese than children in Oregon.

Childhood Obesity Linked to Premature Death

Childhood Obesity Linked to Premature Death
Be aware!
Obese children have double the risk for premature death compared to that of children having a normal weight, and children with pre-diabetes also face twice the risk of an early demise. In addition, children who have high blood pressure are at an increased risk of dying young.

Preschool Obesity

Preschool Obesity

The earlier it starts, the harder it is to overcome. But "the preschool obesity study teaches us that it’s never too early to model healthy behaviors at home. Here are a few suggestions for parents of young children:
  • Limit fruit juice. 100% juice is still high in natural sugar and calories. If your child won’t drink water, slice lemons or oranges to make “fruit water.”
  • Limit TV/DVD time to one hour per day.
  • Don’t use food as a reward. It sends the wrong message.
  • Encourage as much “free play” as possible. Young children will expend plenty of energy during unstructured activities if they are given the opportunity.
  • Be mindful of the “sponge-like” nature of young children. They soak up so many of your behaviors. Model healthy eating and exercise habits.
  • If you suspect your preschooler may be overweight, see a doctor. Early intervention is the key!"

Anna Wintour made the comment, “I’d just been on a trip to Minnesota, where I can only kindly describe most of the people I saw as ‘little houses.”

And Minnesota is one of the healthier states. :-/
